Characterization of the abuse in the students population in a public Ecuadorian university
Abstract
Violence is one of the main Public Health problems, worldwide, with a prevalence of approximately 12 million victims per year. The objective of this research is focused on characterizing the abuse in students of a public university of Ecuador, for which a descriptive, cross-sectional, observational study was carried out during the period September-March 2019, using a random probabilistic sampling, stratified between the faculties of the Institution based on the respective student density. From the global sample, a subgroup was derived consisting of those subjects who declared having suffered abuse at some point in their lives. Variables such as were considered: age, biological sex, sexual orientation, disability, toxic habits, previous and current abuse conditions, type of abuse, the identity of the victimizer, age of onset of abuse, years of abuse, self-definition as a victimizer, a network of support, complaint of abuse and consequences of abuse. The subgroup of victims was made up of 55.10% subjects, with a low tendency to smoke (13%), alcoholism (11.60%), and sedentary lifestyle (13.50%), 2.90% of whom live with disabilities and 15% are current victims of abuse. The main forms of abuse were psychological (75.40%), physical (40.10%), and sexual (13.50%), the age of onset being between 4 and 9 years (48%) and 10 to 14 years (28%), in all cases the grandfather was identified as the victimizer. Abuse prevails in the female gender, heterosexual, single, from the lower middle social class, between 18 and 21 years of age, without any type of disability.
