Abstract

Context: The textile industry's extensive use of dyes, particularly non-biodegradable azo dyes like BRL blue, has led to significant environmental problems due to their difficult degradation, requiring advanced removal techniques beyond conventional treatments. Method: This study compared the efficiency of three methods for treating textile effluents containing BRL blue: an up-flow anaerobic reactor, silver nanoparticles, and heterogeneous photocatalysis with titanium dioxide (TiO2). Results: Among the three methods, heterogeneous photocatalysis with TiO2 proves to be the most efficient, achieving a removal rate of 98% for BRL blue dye. Conclusions: The study highlights the effectiveness of advanced oxidation processes, specifically heterogeneous photocatalysis with TiO2, in addressing the environmental challenges posed by non-biodegradable azo dyes in textile industry effluents, offering a promising solution for their removal.
